Are You Having Fun Yet? by Marian Morgan
Recently I sent an email
to an old friend describing a recent
joyful and transformative experience I
had. His response was staggering. How, he
wondered, could I feel such pleasure with
all the terrible things going on in the
world?
Naturally, I was taken
aback and wondered to myself, what right
did I have to feel happy in the midst of
the ongoing tragic events of our day? And
then I thought of all the times I
witnessed stories of how feelings of joy, glee, self
satisfaction, etc, were snuffed out of many
of our lives over the years... by others
as well as ourselves. Do you have a
"fun" scrooge? Stop right
now.
In my coaching practice, popular issues
clients report include procrastination,
creative blocks, fear. And now
weary and drained, I was personally
running into those same challenges as I
was diligently hammering away at the
computer, day in and day out for the past
eight weeks, developing breakthrough
strategies when I came to a screeching
halt.
"Stop right now!" an internal
voice ordered me. Are you having a good
time?
Well, I thought I was. So, with the
support of my own coach, my job assignment
became to have "fun."
Having fun (especially
in the middle of the day) felt odd. Yet, selecting my
"fun" activities was easier than
I thought once I got over my initial
meltdown. How did I know I was having fun?
I felt lighter, joyful, more energetic,
happier and so did the rest of my day.
Time felt expanded. I had a feeling of
well-being. And the consequence? That
longed for creative breakthrough happened.
And more importantly, I discovered how
much fun it is to have fun, and how
essential it is for my happiness. It’s
crucial for your productivity. Fun and
"time outs" are restorative and
energizing.
When is the last time
you had fun?
One way to know you are
on the right path is when you hear yourself saying "I
feel like a kid again, where did the time
go, I feel happy" and chances are if
you turn back the clock, you may actually
be doing something you loved as a child.
What did you love to do when you were 6 or
7?
If you can't remember when you last had a
lot of fun or had a sense of happiness and
well-being, join the club. You are not
alone...
Are you ready to have
"fun?" Can you imagine orienting
your life around that ...Life is short...
have fun now! Fun comes in all shapes and
sizes. Find yours.
